What Wellness Care Means at River of Life Chiropractic

Quick Summary: Wellness care is about taking a proactive approach to your spine, nervous system, and overall function, rather than only paying attention to your body once something hurts.

Chiropractor treating a patient in a softly lit exam room

Most people first discover chiropractic care because something starts bothering them, low back pain, a headache, neck tension, or an injury finally pushes them to make an appointment. But pain doesn’t have to be the only reason to pay attention to your health.

At River of Life Chiropractic, we look at how your spine is moving, how your nervous system is functioning, and what patterns may be contributing to how you feel and move day to day. We work with patients at very different starting points. Some come in because they’re hurting. Others want to establish a baseline, stay active, or simply be more proactive.

Wellness care isn’t a separate adjustment, technique, or service of its own. It’s an approach that looks beyond today’s symptoms and considers your health and goals for the long term. Our goal isn’t to convince everyone they need care forever, it’s to explain what we’re seeing, walk through your options, and let you decide what level of care fits your body and your life.

Looking Beyond Symptoms

How you feel matters, but symptoms are only one part of the picture. Two people can both walk in with neck tension and have completely different things driving it. One may spend eight hours a day at a desk. Another may have recently ramped up their workouts. Same complaint, different underlying cause.

That’s why your visit doesn’t begin and end with “where does it hurt?” We look at your history, posture, movement, and spinal function together. Digital X-rays give us an objective look at your spine, and for pregnant patients, the Insight Nervous System Scan measures nervous system function without any radiation. Together, that gives us a real picture of where you are today, not a guess.

Wellness Care for Every Stage of Adult Life

Pregnancy. Pregnancy changes how your spine and pelvis carry weight. As your body changes, everyday movements, walking, sleeping, getting in and out of the car, can start to feel different. Dr. Hansen is Webster Technique certified through the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association and provides prenatal care tailored to each stage of pregnancy.

Busy Adults and Families. Work, commuting, exercise, yard work, and long hours at a desk all add up. Some patients come to us because something already hurts. Others just want to stay ahead of it and keep up with a full life. Care here is built around what your own body and schedule actually demand, not a one-size-fits-all plan.

Active Adults. Whether you lift, run, play recreational sports, or just want to stay capable as you get older, movement matters. We look at how your spine and body move in the context of what you actually ask them to do each week, not to chase a perfect posture, but to find restrictions that are actually connected to how you feel and function.

What to Expect at Your First Visit

Here’s the order we work in on a first visit.

  • History. We talk through what’s brought you in, your health history, and what you’d like to get out of care, even if you’re not currently in pain.
  • Physical Exam. Range of motion, orthopedic and neurologic testing, and palpation, personalized to you. A pregnant patient, an active adult, and someone managing an old injury won’t be evaluated the same way.
  • Imaging When Warranted. Digital X-rays confirm what the exam already suggests. For pregnant patients, the Insight Nervous System Scan is used instead, a non-invasive way to measure nervous system function without radiation.
  • First Adjustment, If Appropriate. If care is appropriate and there’s no reason to wait, your first visit may include a gentle, specific adjustment, using Diversified Technique most often, with Activator, Upper Cervical Drop, or Webster Technique for pregnant patients used as your findings call for it.
  • Findings and Recommendations. We’ll walk through what we found, why we’re recommending what we’re recommending, and what your options are. If chiropractic care isn’t the right fit for your situation, we’ll tell you that too.

Personalized Care, Not a One-Size-Fits-All Plan

There isn’t one care plan that makes sense for everyone. Someone managing a recent flare-up needs something different than a pregnant patient, an athlete, or someone coming in periodically just to stay ahead of things. Recommendations here are based on your own history, exam findings, movement, response to care, and goals, not a fixed script. Our job is to explain what we recommend and why. The decision about how you move forward is always yours.

Here’s what falls under wellness care at River of Life Chiropractic:

  • General Chiropractic & Wellness Care, for recurring low back pain, migraines, or neck tension, and for patients who aren’t in pain at all but want to know their nervous system is functioning well.
  • Soft Tissue Therapy, since tight muscles and knotted fascia often mean the nervous system is still holding a guarded pattern. Delivered alongside your adjustment, not as a separate appointment.
  • Therapeutic Exercise, since an adjustment opens the door, and the right exercise, chosen from your exam findings, is what helps your body keep the change.
  • Vagus Nerve Care, for stress-response symptoms that don’t always look like a typical complaint: digestive issues, a jaw that never relaxes, sleep that never feels deep enough.

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the difference between corrective care and wellness care?

Corrective care usually begins when we’re actively working toward specific goals based on your symptoms and exam findings. Wellness care generally comes later, once those goals have been addressed, and typically involves less frequent visits to check in on how you’re doing. The right frequency varies from person to person.

Do I need to be in pain to see a chiropractor?

No. Pain is one of the most common reasons people first come in, but you don’t need to be hurting to have your spine and nervous system evaluated. Some patients come to River of Life Chiropractic just to establish a baseline or be more proactive about their health.

How often should I come in for wellness care?

There isn’t one schedule that fits everyone. It depends on your history, activity level, goals, and how your body responds over time. We’ll give you our recommendation and explain why, but you’re never required to continue care indefinitely.

Do I have to sign up for a care plan?

No. If Dr. Hansen recommends a plan, he’ll explain what he’s recommending, why, and what it’s working toward, along with your payment options, before you decide anything.

Does River of Life Chiropractic accept insurance?

No, we’re a cash-pay practice. This lets us build your care around what your exam actually shows, not what an insurance plan will cover. HSA and FSA funds can be used, and superbills are available if you’d like to submit your visits to your own insurance for possible out-of-network reimbursement.

I recently experienced a sciatic nerve issue that caused significant discomfort and made everyday activities extremely difficult. Even simple tasks like putting on my socks, shoes, or pants in the morning would take me at least 20 minutes because of the pain and limited mobility. I came here for treatment, and within a month, I was amazed at how much better I felt. The pain that had been interfering with my daily routine was gone, and I was able to get back to my normal activities. I’m very grateful for the care and professionalism I received. I highly recommend this establishment to anyone experiencing similar pain or discomfort. They made a significant difference in my quality of life!

He’s incredibly personable, easy to talk to, and you can tell right away that he genuinely cares about the people he’s helping. What I appreciate most is that he takes the time to listen, explain what he’s doing, and make sure you’re comfortable throughout the process. You never feel rushed or like just another appointment on the schedule.

Dr. Hansen actually took X-rays of my spine and went over them with me in detail while explaining my care plan. It was such a different experience from other chiropractors I’ve seen, where treatment began without first getting a clear picture of what was actually going on. Having now experienced both approaches, the difference is astounding. I really appreciate the thoroughness and thought that went into understanding my condition before beginning treatment.

I came in to see Dr. Hansen about 3 months ago. I was having pretty severe neck pain daily. I was struggling with extreme migraines at least 2-3 days a week. After the new patient exam he found underlying issues that were causing the pain and headaches. He made a plan for me and I’m so happy to say that my daily neck pain is gone, I’ve had one migraine since I started. On re exam day I was literally in tears because I had no idea how much those issues were affecting my daily functioning. My overall quality of life has been improved. I am so grateful for the Dr. and this practice! They genuinely care about their patients and take their time to listen and find solutions. 10/10 highly recommend⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I first started seeing Dr. Hansen because I hurt my lower back at the gym. He got it moving and feeling better within the first visit and helped my neck issues as well. I have much more range of motion in my neck and back and no more pain. He’s personable, friendly and professional. I highly recommend him to everyone. For me chiropractic care has been essential to my wellness routine.

Dr. Hansen is an amazing chiropractor. I wasn’t sure anyone would be able to help me with my neck. It has been hurting for months. I thought I slept wrong, but wasn’t sure why it wasn’t going away. Dr. Hansen explained that pain is often the last thing to show up and that my neck had been needing care for longer than I’ve had pain. Then he adjusted me and explained what he was doing throughout the visit. It took 4 visits for the pain to go away and my sleep, energy, focus, sinuses, and headaches have all improved. I will be continuing care as I know it will ensure I maintain my health! I will be sending my friends and families into to see him.
