The Prime, Facilitate, Integrate Process

Whiplash and Neck Pain Have Several Common Causes

Quick Summary: Neck pain and whiplash usually trace back to one of a handful of causes: a rear-end collision, a fall, repetitive desk and phone posture, sleep position, or an old injury that never fully settled. The cause has to be identified through history, movement testing, and hands-on exam before any care plan makes sense.

Most people can tell us the moment it started. A light tap at a stoplight on Texas Avenue. A hard landing on a shoulder. Sometimes it’s quieter than that, a slow ache that showed up after finals week and never left.

Whiplash is a specific thing. Your head gets thrown one direction and snapped back the other, faster than the muscles can brace. And here’s what surprises folks: the crash speed doesn’t predict the symptoms very well. We see people walk away from a serious wreck feeling fine, and we see low-speed parking lot bumps turn into three weeks of headaches and a stiff turn to the left.

  • Rear-end and side-impact collisions, including low-speed ones on the congested stretches around campus and University Drive
  • Falls, sports contact, and lifting something awkward overhead
  • Long hours at a desk or laptop with the head drifting forward, common in a town built around a university calendar
  • Sleeping position and old pillows that hold the neck at an angle all night
  • A previous neck injury that healed enough to ignore but never moved normally again

So we start with your story, then we move you. Range of motion, orthopedic tests, neurologic testing, and careful palpation tell us which structures are irritated. Digital X-rays in our office confirm what the exam suggests about alignment and joint spacing.

A Proper Evaluation Looks Beyond an X-Ray

Treatment without a proper assessment is like trying to read blind. Someone gets rear-ended, goes in somewhere, gets a quick look and a prescription. Nobody ever touched their neck.

We start with your story. How the crash happened, where your head was turned, whether you saw it coming. That last one matters more than people expect, because a braced neck and a relaxed neck absorb force differently. Then the exam: range of motion in every direction, orthopedic tests to sort a joint problem from a nerve problem from a muscle problem, neurologic testing for reflexes, strength, and sensation, and palpation, where a lot of the answer lives. Nine times out of ten, the spot that reproduces your headache isn’t the spot you’d have pointed to.

Only after that do we talk about imaging. In-house digital X-rays let us confirm what the exam suggested and measure it, curve, alignment, how the segments stack. Measured findings, not guesswork. That’s the whole difference between a care plan and a shrug.

The Prime, Facilitate, Integrate Process for Neck Care

Most folks come in guarding their neck, shoulders up by their ears, jaw tight, bracing for something to get cranked. That’s not how we work. Our care runs through three steps, and every one of them has a job.

  • Prime. We start with guided diaphragmatic breathing. A few slow breaths drop the shoulders, soften the muscles around the neck, and tell the nervous system it’s safe. A tense neck fights back. A calm one doesn’t.
  • Facilitate. This is the adjustment itself, gentle and specific to the segments your exam flagged. Dr. Hansen uses mostly Diversified Technique, with Activator or Upper Cervical Drop available depending on what your neck needs, and the Webster Technique used specifically for pregnant patients.
  • Integrate. Instead of rushing back to your day, you ease back into movement. Your brain reads the new input and starts adapting to it over the next day or two as you move normally again.

That third step is the one that matters most for whiplash. After a car accident, the muscles around the neck have spent weeks learning to protect a joint that doesn’t move well. Change the joint without settling the nervous system and the muscles just pull it back.

When Neck Pain Signals an Emergency, Not a Scheduled Visit

Most neck pain and whiplash is mechanical, stiff, achy, worse after a long day, exactly what we’re built to help with. But a few signs mean you need a doctor or the ER first:

  • Weakness, numbness, or tingling running down both arms, or into your legs
  • Trouble controlling your bladder or bowels after a crash or fall
  • The worst headache of your life, especially with a stiff neck and fever
  • Slurred speech, drooping on one side of your face, or sudden trouble with vision or balance
  • Loss of consciousness, or not remembering the impact
  • Pain that hit immediately after high-speed trauma and hasn’t let up at all

If any of these apply to you, call 911 or get to the nearest emergency department. Once that’s ruled out, or if you’ve already been cleared at the ER, we’re glad to help with the recovery that comes next.

Recovery Timelines Vary by Case, Not Guesswork

How long will this take? It’s the first question almost everybody asks, and the honest answer is that it depends on you.

A stiff neck from two nights of bad sleep isn’t the same problem as a car accident where your head snapped forward and back in under half a second. Different tissue, different timeline. Age, prior injuries, desk hours, sleep, and how much the neck curve has shifted all move the needle.

So we don’t hand you a number on day one and hope it holds. What we do instead is set a starting line we can measure: a full history, orthopedic and neurologic testing, range of motion, and hands-on palpation. If in-house digital X-rays are needed, they confirm what the exam already suggested. Then we re-check those same findings later in care and compare.

Here’s what we see often: people feel meaningful change before the objective findings fully catch up. Pain quiets down first, the mechanics take longer. That gap is normal, and it’s exactly why stopping the moment you feel decent tends to backfire.

Frequently Asked Questions

How soon after a car accident should I get my neck checked?

Get checked within a few days, even if you feel fine right now. Whiplash symptoms often show up 24 to 72 hours after a crash, once initial adrenaline wears off. Waiting until pain sets in can let irritated joints and muscles settle into a bad pattern. An early exam with movement testing and digital X-rays gives us a baseline, so we can catch problems before they turn into weeks of headaches or a stiff neck.

Can bad desk posture from studying really cause the same neck pain as a car accident?

Yes, though it builds differently than a collision does. Hours hunched over a laptop pull your head forward, slowly overloading the same joints and muscles a whiplash injury stresses all at once. We see this often after finals week in College Station. The pain can feel identical, tight, grabby, hard to turn, but it developed as a slow overload instead of a sudden one, so we test it differently to find where it started.

Do I need a referral or can I schedule directly after a whiplash injury?

You can schedule directly with us. No referral is needed to be seen for neck pain or whiplash symptoms. Call (979) 383-2105 and we’ll get your history, symptoms, and how the injury happened before your first visit. That way your exam, from range of motion testing to in-house digital X-rays, starts working for you the moment you walk in.

Why does a low-speed fender bender sometimes hurt worse than a big crash?

Crash speed doesn’t predict symptoms well, and we see this often around College Station’s congested stretches. A low-speed parking lot bump can strain small neck ligaments just as much as a harder hit, especially if you didn’t see it coming and your neck wasn’t braced. A relaxed neck absorbs force differently than a tensed one. That’s why we test your neck directly instead of guessing based on how bad the accident looked.

What symptoms after a neck injury mean I shouldn’t wait to be seen?

Arm tingling, headaches at the base of your skull, or trouble turning your head to check a blind spot are signs to get checked soon. These details point to specific structures, nerve, joint, or muscle, and each behaves differently under care. Waiting lets muscles keep guarding a joint that isn’t moving right. Neurologic testing during your exam checks reflexes, strength, and sensation to sort out what’s going on before symptoms get harder to unwind.

I recently experienced a sciatic nerve issue that caused significant discomfort and made everyday activities extremely difficult. Even simple tasks like putting on my socks, shoes, or pants in the morning would take me at least 20 minutes because of the pain and limited mobility. I came here for treatment, and within a month, I was amazed at how much better I felt. The pain that had been interfering with my daily routine was gone, and I was able to get back to my normal activities. I’m very grateful for the care and professionalism I received. I highly recommend this establishment to anyone experiencing similar pain or discomfort. They made a significant difference in my quality of life!

Dr. Hansen actually took X-rays of my spine and went over them with me in detail while explaining my care plan. It was such a different experience from other chiropractors I’ve seen, where treatment began without first getting a clear picture of what was actually going on. Having now experienced both approaches, the difference is astounding. I really appreciate the thoroughness and thought that went into understanding my condition before beginning treatment.

I came in to see Dr. Hansen about 3 months ago. I was having pretty severe neck pain daily. I was struggling with extreme migraines at least 2-3 days a week. After the new patient exam he found underlying issues that were causing the pain and headaches. He made a plan for me and I’m so happy to say that my daily neck pain is gone, I’ve had one migraine since I started. On re exam day I was literally in tears because I had no idea how much those issues were affecting my daily functioning. My overall quality of life has been improved. I am so grateful for the Dr. and this practice! They genuinely care about their patients and take their time to listen and find solutions. 10/10 highly recommend⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Dr. Hansen is an amazing chiropractor. I wasn’t sure anyone would be able to help me with my neck. It has been hurting for months. I thought I slept wrong, but wasn’t sure why it wasn’t going away. Dr. Hansen explained that pain is often the last thing to show up and that my neck had been needing care for longer than I’ve had pain. Then he adjusted me and explained what he was doing throughout the visit. It took 4 visits for the pain to go away and my sleep, energy, focus, sinuses, and headaches have all improved. I will be continuing care as I know it will ensure I maintain my health! I will be sending my friends and families into to see him.
