Quick Summary: Therapeutic exercise helps your body retain the changes made by an adjustment. It is especially helpful for poor posture, weak stabilizer muscles, and recurring habits that pull alignment back out of place, and it pairs well with shoulder problems, neck pain, low back pain, and sciatica.
Lower back pain that flares up after sitting at a desk, sciatica shooting down your leg after a long shift on your feet, neck pain from constantly looking down at your phone, shoulder problems that just won’t completely go away. Those are just a few examples of the complaints Dr. Hansen sees time and time again each week here in College Station. In each case, muscles that should be helping to support the joint are tight or weak, undoing any progress made with an adjustment.
Something we see on a weekly basis is the patient who came in, got adjusted, went home, felt good for several days, went to pick up a basket of laundry, and felt the original pain all over again. That doesn’t mean the adjustment didn’t work, it means the muscles that support and stabilize the spine need some catching up to the adjustment. Therapeutic exercise tends to help most with:
Therapeutic exercise in isolation doesn’t work. It is not a program unto itself, it is one piece that supports the changes your nervous system is making in response to your adjustment.
Care follows Prime, Facilitate, Integrate. Priming the body means guiding you through breathing to downregulate before care. Facilitation is the adjustment itself, most commonly a very precise and gentle Diversified Technique, with Activator or Upper Cervical Drop used as needed, and Webster Technique reserved specifically for pregnant patients. Integration is what helps the body retain the changes made during the adjustment, and it may include a therapeutic exercise that targets the areas we’ve been working on.
If an adjustment isn’t reinforced with movement, the results often fade within a day. Adjustments open the door, exercise helps you walk through it and keep it there. We are not into printing out a sheet of random stretches, every recommendation is based on your specific exam findings, using digital X-rays or a nervous system scan for pregnant patients.
Therapeutic exercise that doesn’t measure change is just hoping, and we don’t guess. Digital X-rays taken here at our office provide an objective evaluation of your spinal alignment, taken before adjustments or exercises begin. For pregnant patients we use a non-invasive nervous system scan called Insight, testing nervous system function gently without adding radiation.
Once you’re able to perform the breathing and stretching drills, we’ll send you home with a routine for the next few weeks, and when you come back we’ll be testing markers from previous visits, not just going by how you feel.
In about 9 cases out of 10, folks are surprised to see changes on their scans even though they’re feeling pretty much the same from one day to the next. Sometimes you’ll feel better before your nervous system is stable, other times more sore because your body and posture are actively changing, which is a good thing. Only measurable progress keeps hope grounded in reality.
It is not always possible to introduce exercise right away. We frequently see patients who tried exercise programs or stretches they found online that made things worse, since introducing movement while the nervous system is still in a stress pattern can reinforce a bad signal.
A few signs point to needing a clinical exam before any exercise starts:
We use on-site digital X-rays to get a look at your structural integrity rather than guessing. When the nervous system is tight, guarded, and protective, exercise alone will not calm it, which is why Prime and Facilitate come first, preparing the body before asking it to perform.
Exercise isn’t something we hand you once and never mention again. We build it into your care as an ongoing part of the process, woven into the Facilitate and Integrate steps to help you keep making progress between visits.
During your rehabilitation we will be asking you to participate in simple, basic, everyday exercises that can be performed in your own home with no special equipment. The focus is going to be on learning and reinforcing the diaphragmatic breathing technique we perform in the office along with some very specific movements based on what we learn from your exam and X-ray studies. The reason for this is that while the adjustment provides opportunity for change, your body has to learn how to take advantage of that opportunity. Here’s what that routine typically looks like:
Patients who skip their home exercises tend to plateau much quicker. The visit opens the door, the exercise is what walks you through it.
Therapeutic exercise helps with low back pain, sciatica, neck pain, and shoulder problems that keep coming back. We see this a lot with College Station patients who sit at a desk all day or spend long shifts on their feet. If your muscles are weak or tight, they can’t hold the changes made during an adjustment. Therapeutic exercise trains those muscles to support your spine so your pain doesn’t return within days.
Your pain often returns because the muscles supporting your spine haven’t caught up to the adjustment yet. We see this weekly: a patient feels great for several days, then picks up a laundry basket and the pain snaps right back. This doesn’t mean the adjustment failed. It means your stabilizer muscles need therapeutic exercise to hold that new alignment in place long-term.
No, every exercise we give you is based on your specific exam findings, not a generic printout. We measure your body first, using digital X-rays or a nervous system scan for pregnant patients. Your routine targets the exact areas we identify as weak or unstable. This means the movements you do at home match what your body needs.
We track it through follow-up X-rays and scans instead of just asking how you feel. About 9 out of 10 patients are surprised to see real changes on their scans even when they feel about the same day to day. Some weeks you’ll feel more sore as your posture shifts, and that’s normal. Measurable markers keep your care plan grounded instead of based on guesswork.
Yes, we adjust the movements to fit your changing body during pregnancy. We use a non-invasive nervous system scan called Insight for pregnant patients, so there’s no added radiation exposure. Every recommendation is based on your scan findings, not a one-size-fits-all routine.
Yes, therapeutic exercise is especially helpful for pain caused by sitting at a desk or looking down at your phone all day. Many College Station patients come in with low back pain that flares up after long work hours or neck pain from screen time. That’s normal, and it’s why we track progress with measurable scans, not just how you feel.

I recently experienced a sciatic nerve issue that caused significant discomfort and made everyday activities extremely difficult. Even simple tasks like putting on my socks, shoes, or pants in the morning would take me at least 20 minutes because of the pain and limited mobility. I came here for treatment, and within a month, I was amazed at how much better I felt. The pain that had been interfering with my daily routine was gone, and I was able to get back to my normal activities. I’m very grateful for the care and professionalism I received. I highly recommend this establishment to anyone experiencing similar pain or discomfort. They made a significant difference in my quality of life!Posted on Google![]()

He’s incredibly personable, easy to talk to, and you can tell right away that he genuinely cares about the people he’s helping. What I appreciate most is that he takes the time to listen, explain what he’s doing, and make sure you’re comfortable throughout the process. You never feel rushed or like just another appointment on the schedule.Posted on Google![]()

Dr. Hansen actually took X-rays of my spine and went over them with me in detail while explaining my care plan. It was such a different experience from other chiropractors I’ve seen, where treatment began without first getting a clear picture of what was actually going on. Having now experienced both approaches, the difference is astounding. I really appreciate the thoroughness and thought that went into understanding my condition before beginning treatment.Posted on Google![]()

I came in to see Dr. Hansen about 3 months ago. I was having pretty severe neck pain daily. I was struggling with extreme migraines at least 2-3 days a week. After the new patient exam he found underlying issues that were causing the pain and headaches. He made a plan for me and I’m so happy to say that my daily neck pain is gone, I’ve had one migraine since I started. On re exam day I was literally in tears because I had no idea how much those issues were affecting my daily functioning. My overall quality of life has been improved. I am so grateful for the Dr. and this practice! They genuinely care about their patients and take their time to listen and find solutions. 10/10 highly recommend⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Posted on Google![]()

Dr. Hansen is an amazing chiropractor. I wasn’t sure anyone would be able to help me with my neck. It has been hurting for months. I thought I slept wrong, but wasn’t sure why it wasn’t going away. Dr. Hansen explained that pain is often the last thing to show up and that my neck had been needing care for longer than I’ve had pain. Then he adjusted me and explained what he was doing throughout the visit. It took 4 visits for the pain to go away and my sleep, energy, focus, sinuses, and headaches have all improved. I will be continuing care as I know it will ensure I maintain my health! I will be sending my friends and families into to see him.Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust.
