Quick Summary: The vagus nerve exits your skull right next to the top two bones in your neck, an area we already pay close attention to during every exam. We’re not claiming an adjustment works on the vagus nerve directly, but the anatomical overlap is real and worth taking seriously. Our care is built around a process of Prime, Facilitate, Integrate to support your nervous system alongside your spine.
Here’s something most people don’t know: the vagus nerve doesn’t start in your gut. It begins at your brainstem and exits your skull through an opening called the jugular foramen, sitting just millimeters from your top two neck bones, before running down alongside your carotid artery into your chest and gut. Those same two joints, C1 and C2, move more than almost anywhere else in your spine, and the connective tissue holding them in place sits right alongside where that nerve travels.
We won’t tell you an adjustment directly changes your vagus nerve function, that’s more than the evidence actually supports right now. What we can say is that the anatomy makes the connection worth paying attention to, and it’s part of why we look closely at the upper neck during your exam regardless of what brought you in.
One thing we talk about with new patients here in College Station is that symptoms aren’t causes. A tight jaw, a headache, a stomach that’s been off for months, these are often signals of a nervous system stuck in a stress response, not separate, unrelated problems.
You may not know what your vagus nerve is, but something’s not right, and you know it. Maybe it’s a stomach that’s been off for months, a jaw that never fully relaxes, or sleep that never feels deep enough no matter how many hours you get.
Between work at TAMU for many of our patients, busy schedules, and kids in multiple activities, it is no surprise that so many nervous systems around College Station stay stuck in a low-grade stress response. None of these signs on their own mean something is seriously wrong, but together they often point to a pattern worth looking at.
What’s going on in my nervous system? Before we touch you, we’ll first listen. History, symptoms, what makes things better or worse, and how long it’s been going on all shape what we look for next.
From there we move into a hands-on exam focused on the upper cervical spine, checking range of motion, palpating for restriction, and looking at posture and muscle tension patterns around the neck and jaw. Digital X-rays are taken as needed to confirm what the exam already suggests, not the other way around.
The goal is not to diagnose a vagus nerve problem in the medical sense, that’s outside our scope. The goal is to find what is mechanically restricted in the area this nerve travels through, and address that directly through the same Prime, Facilitate, Integrate process used for every patient.
Every visit follows the same three steps, and preparing the nervous system for safety matters as much as the adjustment itself. Facilitate is the adjustment, typically the Diversified Technique, with the Activator, Upper Cervical Drop, or Webster Technique (for pregnant patients) used depending on what the exam finds. Integrate is what happens after: instead of rushing you out the door, we ease you back into movement, and your nervous system continues adapting over the next day or two.
We see the shift happen in real time, weekly. Patients come in with their shoulders up, breathing from their chest. By the end of Integrate, shoulders drop and breath comes fuller. That’s not coincidental.
Change like this builds in cycles, not from one big fix. Each visit builds on the last as your nervous system gradually adapts.
Chiropractic vagus nerve care isn’t the right first step for every condition. A few situations call for medical evaluation first, not a chiropractic visit:
If you’re not sure which category applies, call your primary doctor, or 911 if appropriate, and reach out to us once you’re safe.
Most College Station patients notice small changes within 2-4 visits, though this varies by person. Because the Integrate phase gives your nervous system time to adapt after each adjustment, results tend to build gradually rather than happen overnight. We track your progress at each visit so you can see the pattern forming, not just guess at it.
It’s built into your regular visit, not billed as an add-on. Every adjustment at our College Station clinic includes the Prime, Facilitate, Integrate process, so breathing work and nervous system support happen alongside your spinal care. You won’t be asked to book a separate appointment for it.
Yes, this is one of the most common patterns we see in College Station patients. Prolonged stress keeps your vagus nerve signaling stuck in fight-or-flight, which shows up as neck or jaw tightness, digestive issues, or trouble winding down at night. During your exam, we look at how your nervous system and spine are functioning together, not just where it hurts.
Not always, we start with your history and a hands-on evaluation of your spine, reflexes, and range of motion. Digital x-rays are used afterward. For pregnant patients, we use the Insight Nervous System Scan instead, which measures nervous system function without any radiation.
Not in the formal sense, no. You won’t find ‘vagus nerve dysfunction’ written on a diagnosis from your medical doctor the way you would with something like hypothyroidism. It’s a descriptive way we talk about a pattern, a nervous system stuck in a stress response and not regulating well. We think it’s a useful way to describe what we’re actually assessing, but we want to be upfront that it’s descriptive, not a formal diagnosis.
It varies quite a bit from person to person. Some people notice something right away, a lighter feeling, an easier full breath, more calm. Others don’t notice much after the first visit, and it takes a few sessions before a pattern shows up. We’d rather tell you that honestly upfront than promise a specific reaction we can’t guarantee.

I recently experienced a sciatic nerve issue that caused significant discomfort and made everyday activities extremely difficult. Even simple tasks like putting on my socks, shoes, or pants in the morning would take me at least 20 minutes because of the pain and limited mobility. I came here for treatment, and within a month, I was amazed at how much better I felt. The pain that had been interfering with my daily routine was gone, and I was able to get back to my normal activities. I’m very grateful for the care and professionalism I received. I highly recommend this establishment to anyone experiencing similar pain or discomfort. They made a significant difference in my quality of life!Posted on Google![]()

I’ve had a great experience with Dr. Levi at River of Life Chiropractic. He’s incredibly personable, easy to talk to, and you can tell right away that he genuinely cares about the people he’s helping. What I appreciate most is that he takes the time to listen, explain what he’s doing, and make sure you’re comfortable throughout the process. You never feel rushed or like just another appointment on the schedule.Posted on Google![]()

Dr. Hansen actually took X-rays of my spine and went over them with me in detail while explaining my care plan. It was such a different experience from other chiropractors I’ve seen, where treatment began without first getting a clear picture of what was actually going on. Having now experienced both approaches, the difference is astounding. I really appreciate the thoroughness and thought that went into understanding my condition before beginning treatment.Posted on Google![]()

I came in to see Dr. Hansen about 3 months ago. I was having pretty severe neck pain daily. I was struggling with extreme migraines at least 2-3 days a week. After the new patient exam he found underlying issues that were causing the pain and headaches. He made a plan for me and I’m so happy to say that my daily neck pain is gone, I’ve had one migraine since I started. On re exam day I was literally in tears because I had no idea how much those issues were affecting my daily functioning. My overall quality of life has been improved. I am so grateful for the Dr. and this practice! They genuinely care about their patients and take their time to listen and find solutions. 10/10 highly recommend⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Posted on Google![]()

Dr. Hansen is an amazing chiropractor. I wasn’t sure anyone would be able to help me with my neck. It has been hurting for months. I thought I slept wrong, but wasn’t sure why it wasn’t going away. Dr. Hansen explained that pain is often the last thing to show up and that my neck had been needing care for longer than I’ve had pain. Then he adjusted me and explained what he was doing throughout the visit. It took 4 visits for the pain to go away and my sleep, energy, focus, sinuses, and headaches have all improved. I will be continuing care as I know it will ensure I maintain my health! I will be sending my friends and families into to see him.Verified by TrustindexTrustindex verified badge is the Universal Symbol of Trust. College Station is home base, but patients regularly drive in from Bryan, Navasota, Caldwell, and Snook for care, most traveling somewhere between 30 and 45 minutes to get here. Within College Station itself, we see a lot of familiar faces from Pebble Creek, Indian Lakes, Southern Pointe, and the Castlegate and Castlerock communities.
Wherever you are driving in from, the visit looks the same: a real exam first, X-rays when they are actually needed, and a plan built around what your body is showing us, not a guess based on your zip code.
