What General Chiropractic & Wellness Care Treats

Quick Summary: Chiropractic care most often helps with low back pain, sciatica, neck pain, migraines, and shoulder trouble. These complaints usually trace back to how the spine moves and how well the nerves inside it are communicating. The starting point is always a physical exam, and an X-ray, not a guess based on where it hurts.

Most folks walk in pointing at one spot. Low back. Base of the skull. Behind one shoulder blade. That spot matters, but it’s rarely the whole story.

The spine protects the nerves that run your whole body. When segments of it stop moving well, the nerves passing through get irritated, and the body starts sending signals you feel as pain, tightness, numbness, or headaches. So the pain location and the problem location aren’t always the same place. We see this every single week. Someone comes in certain their hip is the issue, and the exam points to the lower lumbar spine instead.

Here are the complaints we work with most often in our College Station office:

  • Low back pain that flares after sitting, lifting, or a long drive down Texas Avenue
  • Sciatica, meaning pain, burning, or tingling that travels down one leg
  • Neck pain and stiffness, often from desk work or phone posture
  • Migraines and recurring headaches tied to upper neck tension
  • Shoulder pain and limited reach overhead

Notice what’s missing from that list. We don’t claim to treat everything. If your symptoms point somewhere outside spinal and nervous system care, we’ll tell you straight and help you find the right person.

And there’s a group we see who aren’t in pain at all. They’re tired, foggy, sleeping poorly, or just feel off. That’s worth checking too. Wellness care looks at how the nervous system is functioning, not only whether something hurts today.

Every one of these starts the same way, history, orthopedic and neurologic testing, range of motion, and hands-on palpation. A physical exam always comes first, and digital X-rays taken in our office come after, to confirm what the exam already suggested.

How Your First Visit Is Evaluated, Step by Step

Nobody should get adjusted before someone examines them. That’s the whole reason your first visit takes longer than the ones that follow. We need to know what’s going on with your spine and nervous system, and the only way to find that out is to look.

Here’s the order we work in on a first visit.

  • History. We sit down and you talk. When it started, what makes it worse, what you’ve already tried, what you’re afraid it means.
  • Range of motion. We watch how you bend, turn, and look over your shoulder. Where you stop tells us a lot.
  • Orthopedic tests. Specific hands-on tests that stress one structure at a time to narrow down the source.
  • Neurologic testing. Reflexes, muscle strength, and sensation, because numbness and weakness change the plan.
  • Palpation. We feel along the spine for restricted joints, tight muscle, and tenderness you may not have noticed.
  • Imaging when it’s warranted. The physical exam guides this step. In-house digital X-rays confirm what the exam already suggested and rule out things we shouldn’t adjust over.
  • Report. You see the findings and hear what they mean in plain words.

Notice that X-rays come near the end, after the physical exam has already pointed us somewhere. They’re a confirming step, not the headline. An image can’t tell us your reflex is dull on the left. It can’t tell us you can only turn your head twenty degrees to the right. Hands and questions find that.

For pregnant and pediatric patients we also run an Insight Nervous System Scan. It measures nervous system activity without any radiation, and it gives us a number we can re-check later.

The Prime, Facilitate, Integrate Approach

Most people picture a chiropractic visit as walk in, get cracked, walk out. That’s not how we do it here. Your nervous system doesn’t change because something popped. It changes when it feels safe enough to let go. So we built the visit around three steps: Prime, Facilitate, Integrate.

Here’s what each step is doing for you.

  • Prime. We start with guided diaphragmatic breathing. Slow breath low in the belly, not up in the chest. It calms the stress side of your nervous system and softens the muscles guarding your spine. A guarded body fights the adjustment. A calm one accepts it.
  • Facilitate. This is the adjustment itself. Gentle and specific, aimed at the exact segment your exam and imaging pointed to. We use Diversified Technique most often, with Activator and Upper Cervical Drop when those fit better, and Webster Technique for pregnancy patients. No twisting you into a pretzel to see what moves.
  • Integrate. Instead of rushing back to your day, you ease back into movement. Your brain reads the new input and starts adapting to it over the next day or two as you move normally again.

That third step is the one people skip everywhere else, and it’s the one we care most about.

We pick the technique based on you, not habit. A pregnant mom in her third trimester and a 19 year old A&M student who fell off a longboard don’t get the same hands. Webster is certified work reserved for pregnancy. Activator is a small instrument, low force, good for folks who tense up at the thought of a manual adjustment or who have bone density concerns.

When Symptoms Mean You Need Immediate Medical Attention

Most back pain and headaches are mechanical and nervous system related, exactly what we’re set up to help with. But a few signs mean you need a medical doctor or the ER first:

  • Loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness in the groin and inner thighs
  • Sudden weakness in a leg or arm that’s getting worse by the hour
  • Back pain with fever, chills, or unexplained weight loss
  • Severe pain right after a car wreck, a fall, or a hard hit
  • The worst headache of your life, especially with slurred speech or vision changes

If any of these apply to you, call 911 or get to the emergency room. Once that’s ruled out, we’re glad to help with the kind of pain we specialize in.

Tracking Progress Instead of Guessing

Feeling better is good news. It just isn’t proof by itself.

Pain is one of the last things to show up and one of the first things to leave. So a person can feel great on week three and still have the same movement restriction that started the whole thing. That’s why we re-check. We repeat the same physical exam we did on day one: history, orthopedic tests, neurologic testing, range of motion, and palpation. Then we compare it side by side with your starting findings. Digital X-rays taken in our office support that picture when they’re needed. They confirm what the physical exam and the tests already suggest.

For pregnant and pediatric patients, we also use the Insight Nervous System Scan. It gives us a reading we can look at together, not a guess.

Here’s what we’re watching between visits.

  • Range of motion, measured the same way each time, not eyeballed
  • Orthopedic and neurologic tests that were positive at the start and whether they’ve changed
  • How long relief holds between visits, which tells us more than how good day one felt
  • What you can do again, sitting through a full class, sleeping on your side, picking up your toddler
  • Scan or imaging findings when they apply, reviewed with you on the screen

And sometimes the honest answer is that a finding hasn’t moved yet. We’d rather say that out loud than stretch a story. That opens a real conversation about whether the plan needs to change, whether something else is going on, or whether you need a different kind of care entirely.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a first chiropractic visit take in College Station?

Your first visit takes longer than follow-ups because a full exam comes before any adjustment. You’ll go through history, range of motion, orthopedic and neurologic testing, and palpation. If X-rays are needed, those happen in-office the same day. Plan for extra time compared to a regular visit, since the goal is a clear picture of your spine before anything else happens.

Do I need X-rays before getting adjusted?

Not always, and X-rays never come first. The physical exam happens before any imaging, and in-house digital X-rays are only taken when the exam points to a reason for them. They confirm what hands-on testing already suggested, like a restricted joint or something we shouldn’t adjust over. Many patients never need one at all.

Can chiropractic care help with headaches from desk work?

Yes, migraines and recurring headaches tied to upper neck tension are one of the most common complaints we see. If you spend long hours at a desk or looking down at a phone, that posture strains the upper neck and can trigger headaches. An exam checks range of motion and palpates the neck to find exactly which segments are restricted before any adjustment happens.

Is chiropractic care safe during pregnancy?

Yes, pregnancy-related pelvic and low back discomfort is a complaint we regularly work with. Pregnant patients get Webster Technique specifically, and pediatric and pregnant patients also get an Insight Nervous System Scan, which uses no radiation. The technique used depends on the person, so a third-trimester mom is handled differently than a typical adult patient.

Does an adjustment have to make a popping sound to work?

No. That popping sound, when it happens, is just joint cavitation, a pressure change in the joint that releases gas, not bones cracking. An adjustment doesn’t need that sound to be effective. The goal is restoring motion and giving the joint and nervous system the right input, and that change can happen with no audible sound at all.

I recently experienced a sciatic nerve issue that caused significant discomfort and made everyday activities extremely difficult. Even simple tasks like putting on my socks, shoes, or pants in the morning would take me at least 20 minutes because of the pain and limited mobility. I came here for treatment, and within a month, I was amazed at how much better I felt. The pain that had been interfering with my daily routine was gone, and I was able to get back to my normal activities. I’m very grateful for the care and professionalism I received. I highly recommend this establishment to anyone experiencing similar pain or discomfort. They made a significant difference in my quality of life!

Dr. Hansen actually took X-rays of my spine and went over them with me in detail while explaining my care plan. It was such a different experience from other chiropractors I’ve seen, where treatment began without first getting a clear picture of what was actually going on. Having now experienced both approaches, the difference is astounding. I really appreciate the thoroughness and thought that went into understanding my condition before beginning treatment.

I came in to see Dr. Hansen about 3 months ago. I was having pretty severe neck pain daily. I was struggling with extreme migraines at least 2-3 days a week. After the new patient exam he found underlying issues that were causing the pain and headaches. He made a plan for me and I’m so happy to say that my daily neck pain is gone, I’ve had one migraine since I started. On re exam day I was literally in tears because I had no idea how much those issues were affecting my daily functioning. My overall quality of life has been improved. I am so grateful for the Dr. and this practice! They genuinely care about their patients and take their time to listen and find solutions. 10/10 highly recommend⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Dr. Hansen is an amazing chiropractor. I wasn’t sure anyone would be able to help me with my neck. It has been hurting for months. I thought I slept wrong, but wasn’t sure why it wasn’t going away. Dr. Hansen explained that pain is often the last thing to show up and that my neck had been needing care for longer than I’ve had pain. Then he adjusted me and explained what he was doing throughout the visit. It took 4 visits for the pain to go away and my sleep, energy, focus, sinuses, and headaches have all improved. I will be continuing care as I know it will ensure I maintain my health! I will be sending my friends and families into to see him.
