Quick Summary: Whiplash happens when your head is thrown rapidly back and forth, most often in a rear-end crash. Symptoms can take hours or even a day to appear. Get medically cleared first. Then, in our College Station office, Dr. Hansen uses a careful exam and gentle, staged care to address neck pain, stiffness, and headaches.
Whiplash is a neck injury caused by a fast, forceful back-and-forth movement of the head, a lot like the crack of a whip. According to Mayo Clinic, rear-end car crashes are the most common cause, but sports collisions and falls can do it too.
In a rear-end crash, the seat pushes your body forward while your head whips back and then forward, all in a fraction of a second. That motion can strain the muscles and other soft tissues of the neck before you have any chance to brace.
Here’s what surprises a lot of people: you can feel fine at the scene. You’re focused on the car, the other driver, and whether everyone is okay. Your neck might not hurt at all. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons notes that symptoms may not start until hours after the injury, or even the next day, and that pain often peaks a day or so later instead of right away.
So it’s common to wake up the morning after a fender bender with a neck that won’t turn, a headache at the back of the head, or shoulders that feel like they carried something heavy all night. Late symptoms are still real symptoms, and they deserve a proper look.
The condition of the car isn’t a reliable guide either. A bumper with barely a scratch doesn’t tell you how your neck handled the jolt, so judge by your symptoms, not the damage.
Whiplash isn’t only a car accident problem. A hard tackle, a collision going for a ball, or a fall where the head snaps back can strain the neck the same way. If your neck got jolted during a game or practice, the same careful approach applies, and our sports chiropractic care keeps your return to activity in view as part of the plan.
Neck pain and stiffness are the most common whiplash symptoms, but because the injury strains several tissues at once, symptoms can spread beyond the neck. Common symptoms include:
The headaches deserve a closer look. Headaches that begin at the base of the skull and wrap toward the eye can be driven by the neck itself, a pattern called cervicogenic headaches. After a crash, they can linger well after the worst of the neck soreness settles down, which is why we ask detailed questions about when they start and what makes them worse.
Dizziness, fogginess, and trouble concentrating need a careful look too. These can come from the neck, but they can also come from a head injury. If you have any of them after a crash, make sure a medical provider has checked you for a concussion before you see us.
Whiplash also tends to tangle with whatever your neck was already doing before the crash. Plenty of people had some stiffness from desk work or old injuries, and the accident turned the volume up. Sorting out what’s new and what was there before is part of the exam. If your symptoms look more like everyday neck pain from posture or strain, we’ll tell you that too.
Symptoms can also shift over the first couple of weeks. A neck that felt mostly stiff on day two might feel achy and tired by day ten. Keep a simple written timeline of what started when, since it helps both your medical provider and our office see the full picture.
After any crash or hard fall, get checked by a medical provider before you see a chiropractor, even if you feel fine. Some injuries need emergency care right away. MedlinePlus head injury guidance and orthopedic guidance both point to these warning signs. Go to the ER if:
If none of those apply, here’s a simple way to decide what’s next:
Once serious injury has been ruled out, care starts the way your first visit always does: with a detailed history and a hands-on exam that covers range of motion, orthopedic and neurologic testing, and palpation of the spine. Digital X-rays are taken in-house only when the exam findings call for them. Dr. Hansen then shows you what he found on a spine model or your X-rays and tells you plainly whether he believes he can help. If he suspects a fracture or another problem that needs different care, he’ll refer you out. For a fresh, acute muscle injury, physical therapy may be the better first step, and he’ll tell you so. The goal is the right care in the right order.
Care after whiplash is staged, because freshly injured tissue needs a lighter touch. Early on, Prime uses guided breathing to help your body settle out of a guarded, stressed state, which matters a lot after a scary event. Facilitate starts gentle. Activator and Upper Cervical Drop techniques let Dr. Hansen adjust the neck without the snap and crack many people worry about, and the pop is never the goal. Soft tissue work helps with guarded muscles. As things calm down, adjustments can become more specific.
Integrate is what happens between visits: gentle movement, sleep, and home exercises that rebuild strength and control in the neck. Progress is judged by your symptoms, how you function day to day, and how your joints move. That structure sits at the center of our neck pain and whiplash care.
We see people from College Station, Bryan, and nearby towns. When you’ve been cleared and you’re ready, schedule your first appointment and we’ll start with a careful look.
See a medical provider first, ideally soon after the crash, even if you feel fine. Once serious injury has been ruled out, a chiropractic exam can happen whenever you’re ready. There’s no reason to wait until the pain becomes unbearable. Dr. Hansen will check your history, movement, and nerve function, and if anything suggests you need further medical evaluation, he’ll refer you before starting care.
Whiplash symptoms often show up hours after the injury or even the next day. In the moment, you’re focused on the crash and everyone’s safety, and soreness in strained tissue can build as the hours pass. Pain may peak a day or so after the injury. A delayed start doesn’t mean the injury is minor, so it’s worth getting checked.
For most people, gentle adjusting is reasonable once a medical provider has ruled out serious injury and Dr. Hansen has completed a thorough exam. He won’t adjust if he suspects a fracture or sees other red flags. Early care stays light, often using Activator or Upper Cervical Drop techniques, which avoid the quick twisting motion many people worry about. You can always ask questions or say no.
It can. Whiplash comes from how quickly the head is thrown back and forth, and Mayo Clinic notes that rear-end collisions are the most common cause. A slow bump can still jolt the neck, and a car with little visible damage doesn’t rule out an injury. If you notice stiffness, headaches, or arm tingling in the days after even a minor crash, see a medical provider first, then have your neck examined.
Yes, dizziness, fatigue, and trouble concentrating are recognized symptoms of whiplash. They can also be signs of a head injury such as a concussion. If you’re dizzy, foggy, or having trouble focusing after an accident, get checked by a medical provider first. Once a head injury has been ruled out, we can look at how your neck may be contributing.
Yes, we see Texas A&M students, faculty, and families from all over the Brazos Valley. A fender bender on the way to class or a hard fall during a pickup game can leave your neck sore for days. Once you’ve been medically cleared, we’ll fit your visits around a class or work schedule and start with a full exam at our College Station office.

I recently experienced a sciatic nerve issue that caused significant discomfort and made everyday activities extremely difficult. Even simple tasks like putting on my socks, shoes, or pants in the morning would take me at least 20 minutes because of the pain and limited mobility. I came here for treatment, and within a month, I was amazed at how much better I felt. The pain that had been interfering with my daily routine was gone, and I was able to get back to my normal activities. I’m very grateful for the care and professionalism I received. I highly recommend this establishment to anyone experiencing similar pain or discomfort. They made a significant difference in my quality of life!Posted on Google![]()

Dr. Hansen actually took X-rays of my spine and went over them with me in detail while explaining my care plan. It was such a different experience from other chiropractors I’ve seen, where treatment began without first getting a clear picture of what was actually going on. Having now experienced both approaches, the difference is astounding. I really appreciate the thoroughness and thought that went into understanding my condition before beginning treatment.Posted on Google![]()

I came in to see Dr. Hansen about 3 months ago. I was having pretty severe neck pain daily. I was struggling with extreme migraines at least 2-3 days a week. After the new patient exam he found underlying issues that were causing the pain and headaches. He made a plan for me and I’m so happy to say that my daily neck pain is gone, I’ve had one migraine since I started. On re exam day I was literally in tears because I had no idea how much those issues were affecting my daily functioning. My overall quality of life has been improved. I am so grateful for the Dr. and this practice! They genuinely care about their patients and take their time to listen and find solutions. 10/10 highly recommend⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Posted on Google![]()
